YARN:   This shawl is designed to be worked in fingering, so it will be light and lovely, with nice drape.  It can be worked in other weights of yarn.  I have not tested those for needle size or amounts.  Your best guess at what you need will be necessary, I do not have these answers.  Thank you for your understanding.

NEEDLES & GAUGE:    

US 04’s/ 3.5 mm rounds & DPN’s  - SOME KNITTERS may wish to ALSO USE  US 03’s/ 3.25 mm
(I like casting on the center with DPN’s and using them for the I-Cord CO & BO)

This starts small and gets bigger, interchangeable needles with varying length cables are great.
If using fixed needles, I would look for the longest cable and use magic loop.

GAUGE uses US 04’s/ 3.5 mm in Stocking Knit, in the ROUND, before BLOCKING. GAUGE = 24 sts to 4” and 38 Rows to 4”
Having good gauge is important checking, even in process is wise. Knitting too loosely will negatively impact your end results.

SIZE:  The piece requires a hard and wet block to open the lace and even out the garter rows in the rainbow.

HEIGHT:  30” / 77 cm  the length can vary.  After blocking, it will be quite long. The Center portion is 40” wide.

The rainbow flag will can be made longer or shorter. Length is measured at the longest points.
LONGEST LENGTH: 132”/ 336 cm (11 feet / 3.35 meters)

NOTIONS:      

•Markers +/- 20, if desired (at least one is needed at the start). •A yarn sewing needle for tucking in ends.

Shortly after I saw the new PRIDE flag in 2019, I produced this design idea for a shawl. It has been in the background for about 3 years & now, it is time for me to get it out to the world. I am both excited and hesitant to offer something that I feel is both important and very symbolic. In working on this design, my general tendency to add my own spin & ideas onto a base concept needed to be held in check in order to honor the original. I truly hope I have given this important symbol a novel look and that I am offering you something enjoyable to make, mixed with a little history about the Progress & Pride flags. This is a thoughtful & mindful knitting project promoting tolerance and acceptance of all peoples.
